Rozafa Castle is the main fortress associated with Shkodër. “Shkodër Castle” and “Rozafa Castle” refer to the same landmark; they should not be planned as two separate attractions.
Why visit Rozafa?
The castle stands on a hill at the entrance to the city. Albania’s National Tourism Agency describes successive phases of construction spanning several historical periods. Walking through the site gives you a better sense of its defensive position than viewing it only from below.
The legend of Rozafa is part of the site’s cultural significance. Treat the legend as folklore, and use the interpretation panels or a guide for the documented history of the walls and buildings.
Plan the approach
Allow for the climb from the approach road and for uneven stone underfoot. Shoes with grip are more useful than smooth-soled sandals. Ask a driver where the drop-off point is and arrange the return journey before entering, especially if you plan to stay until late afternoon.
Check the current opening hours and ticket price. Sunset is not a guarantee that the site remains open. In wet conditions, shorten your walk if the paving becomes slippery; avoid exposed edges and do not climb the walls for photographs.
What else to combine with the visit
Return to the centre for the Marubi photography museum or a meal, depending on the time available. Mesi Bridge is another heritage outing outside the centre, but it is a bridge rather than a second city fortress. Plan its transport separately.
For visitors with limited mobility
Before booking, ask the site or your transport provider about the approach, gradients and access to the areas you want to see. A vehicle drop-off does not establish step-free access inside the monument.
