A trip to the Albanian Alps starts with a route choice. A valley walk from your accommodation and a crossing between Theth and Valbona require different preparation. Albania’s National Tourism Agency identifies Theth, Valbona and Vermosh within the Albanian Alps National Park.
Choose your base before booking
Theth: consider it if you want to stay in one village and plan separate outings. Grunas Waterfall and the Blue Eye are commonly visited, but the distance and difficulty depend on your exact starting point. Ask your host about the route and current conditions.
Valbona: plan around your accommodation’s position in the valley. A transfer may be needed to reach the start of your walk; a booking labelled “Valbona” does not tell you how close it is to the trailhead.
The Theth–Valbona crossing
This is a mountain crossing, not a casual link between two road stops. Check the elevation gain, distance from your actual accommodation, trail conditions and forecast with a local guide. Plan onward transport and luggage separately. If you drive to one valley, do not assume you can collect the car easily from the other side.
Season and conditions
Snow, storms, rain and shorter daylight can change the suitability of a route. A village being reachable by road does not mean a high pass is suitable for hiking. In shoulder season, confirm that your accommodation and transfers are operating. Avoid committing to a crossing solely because an online itinerary lists it for that month.
Before leaving
- Share your route and expected return time with your host.
- Carry an offline map, charged phone, water, food, layers and a headlamp.
- Confirm where reliable water is available rather than assuming every stream is suitable.
- Agree on a turnaround time and a lower-level alternative.
