Butrint is a UNESCO World Heritage site in southern Albania, combining archaeological remains with a landscape of woodland and water. It is a useful addition to a stay in Saranda or Ksamil, provided you leave enough time for the site and the return journey.
What to see
Follow the site’s visitor route through the archaeological remains and use the interpretation panels to understand its different periods. The theatre, baptistery and later fortifications are among the features associated with Butrint. Access to individual areas or delicate surfaces can vary; do not assume every feature seen in photographs is exposed or accessible during your visit.
How to get there
Arrange transport from Saranda or Ksamil and check the exact departure point, destination and last return service. When using a taxi or driver, agree on waiting time and the return price before departure. Use the archaeological park entrance as your destination.
Do not plan to walk from Saranda in an hour. UNESCO places Butrint approximately 20 km from the modern city of Saranda. A map distance is not an assessment of pedestrian safety or a suitable walking route. For a day visit, use an appropriate transport option and save your walking time for the site.
Tickets and timing
Check the park’s current admission price, opening hours and last entry directly before travel. Ticket conditions may differ by visitor category. Allow a flexible half-day in your itinerary including transport, breaks and the site walk; this is a planning allowance, not an official visit duration.
What to bring
Wear shoes suitable for uneven surfaces and bring water and sun protection. Stay on authorised paths. If you need step-free access, contact the site about the specific route rather than assuming the whole park is accessible.
